Dear families,
Another eventful week begins inside room 202! I enjoyed hearing some of the highlights from Masimba’s Birthday celebration today and hope all of the participants had a super-exciting time. Maya brought in her pet hamster today and allowed the students to witness “a day in the life” of a hamster. The students had many questions and loved watching the hamster eat, hide and play. Thank you Maya for sharing your cherished pet with us!
Both grades will continue to write tests (CAT-4/EQAO) this week. All testing takes place in the morning. If students missed any mornings, there will be makeup days this Wednesday and Thursday. I am very proud of all of your hard work during this testing period; many of you are enjoying this process and feel well-prepared which is great news. As it is a short week, we will be continuing with many of the lesson topics from last week.
In Language Arts, the students are working on their final good copy of their persuasive letters. I must say, these letter outlines are looking quite convincing and are entertaining to read. Great work boys and girls! If time, the students will share their letters in small groups and ask each other “thick” questions. For Spelling, both grades should be working on Spelling List 29 activity pages due this Thursday. The grade 2 students will have 15 list words (+2 bonus words from now until the end of June) as they prepare for grade 3. The spelling test will be on Monday June 10th as Friday is a P.A. Day.
In Mathematics, we will continue learning about Probability. In this chapter, students further develop their understanding of the likelihood that an event will occur. They will investigate probability through everyday contexts and through activities with coins, dice and spinners. Some new math words throughout this unit are: impossible, certain, likely and unlikely. The students will also be learning about fractions to coincide with the probability lessons. There will be a math quiz on Thursday on all the taught probability concepts thus far.
In Social Studies, the students will creatively design a community map following the success criteria we developed together. Their maps should include a title, a legend and relevant symbols.
Looking forward to another great week!
Sincerely,
Ms. Bertone
